Seesaw

by Jordan Green

you and i
we're on a seesaw
scaled down to size
attempting equilibrium
in an inequal world
of opinions and
splinters in my raw hands
from shuffling on the draw bridge
leading to my purple castle
we sit on
opposite sides of the
gangplank and I
walk
Do you see what I saw?
Do I see what you saw?
You scrunch your bleeding toes
on the cracking mud
and lunge
to reach for the blushing sky
when you are high
I am low
I'll touch the sky
with you below
my stomach's sick
like I've been clinging to the
merry-go-round for more than an hour
you laugh because
I cling to you
chained to you with
rusty links that hold
those glorious swings
we're teetering on the edge
of frustration and yes,
I'm distraught and caught,
woven in the monkey bars
tears streaming from my eyes
we're tottering from our seats
on that burgundy leather couch
or the same peeling board
I'm afraid you'll jump off
and leave me off-balanced
instable
and splattered with mud
can't we just agree to weigh the same
and surrender our saddles
on the count of three?
a trembling board we'll leave
behind to race to the swings
where we'll both be high.
