Why?

Why does it have to be one way or another
why does it have to be now or never
can’t we just be the best friends of all
can’t you just be the friend that I call

I have never been able to understand why
you’re so devoted to me and why
it’s so hard to give me up and why
I’d rather run away and you’d rather die

nothing has answered these questions of why
why does this have to be hard and why
do I feel guilt and freedom at the same time
and love and compassion will never combine.
